A contractor working on the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in Arunachal Pradesh was tricked with a forged clearance letter worth Rs 17 crore, leading to three arrests.

Arunachal Pradesh police have arrested three individuals after a contractor involved in the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) was deceived by a counterfeit clearance letter allegedly worth Rs 17 crore. The fraudulent document purported to grant the contractor official approval to commence a road‑building project under the central scheme.

According to the investigation, the fake clearance letter was presented to the contractor as a genuine sanction from the relevant authorities, prompting the firm to allocate substantial resources based on the promised funding. The deception was uncovered when discrepancies in the document’s authentication were reported to the police.

Law enforcement officials said the three arrested suspects are suspected of forging official paperwork and attempting to defraud the contractor and, by extension, the government scheme. The suspects are currently in custody and are being questioned for further details about the network behind the forgery.

The incident highlights vulnerabilities in the verification processes for project clearances under large‑scale infrastructure programmes. Authorities have urged other contractors and agencies to exercise heightened caution and verify all official communications through designated channels.

The case is being investigated under the state's fraud and forgery statutes, and further legal action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
