Telugu diaspora in Austria celebrates Bathukamma and Dasara with traditional fervour

Vienna‑based Telugu families gathered this week to mark Bathukamma, the floral festival that symbolizes the goddess’s grace, by arranging intricate flower stacks and performing traditional songs. The celebrations were organized by local cultural associations that invited participants from across Austria, creating a vibrant display of Telangana’s heritage on European soil.

The same community also observed Dasara, the ten‑day Hindu festival honoring the triumph of good over evil. Rituals included the worship of Goddess Durga, cultural performances, and the sharing of customary sweets. Residents described the events as a way to keep their language and customs alive while introducing Austrian neighbours to Indian traditions.

Organisers highlighted that the dual celebrations fostered a sense of belonging among the diaspora and strengthened ties with the Indian consulate, which extended logistical support. The gatherings underscored the growing visibility of South Indian cultural festivals within Europe’s multicultural landscape.
