The Union Minister for Commerce, Piyush Goyal, announced that Telangana's Geographical Indication‑registered Tur Dal has started shipping to Australia, marking a milestone for Indian GI products.
Telangana's pigeon‑pea dal, known locally as Tur Dal, received Geographical Indication (GI) status for its unique taste and quality, and the state has been promoting it as a premium export commodity. In a recent announcement, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal confirmed that the first consignment of this GI‑registered Tur Dal has been dispatched to Australia, opening a new market for the crop. The shipment, handled by state agricultural agencies and private exporters, is expected to meet growing demand among Indian diaspora and health‑conscious consumers abroad. Goyal highlighted the export as evidence that Indian GI products are gaining acceptance worldwide, and he urged other states to leverage their own GI tags to boost agricultural exports. The move aligns with the government's broader strategy to diversify India’s food‑export basket and increase farmer incomes through value‑added products.
