The Tamil Nadu government announced plans to seek the Union government's clearance for constructing an airport at Rameswaram.
The state cabinet of Tamil Nadu has formally decided to approach the central government for permission to develop a civilian airport at Rameswaram, a town on the southern tip of the island. Officials said the proposal will be presented to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and other relevant authorities for approval.\nRameswaram is a major pilgrimage and tourist hub, attracting millions of visitors to its temples and coastal attractions each year. An airport is expected to boost connectivity, reduce travel time and stimulate local economic activity, especially in the tourism and fisheries sectors.\nUnder India’s aviation policy, any new airport project requires clearance from the Union government, including environmental clearances and allocation of airspace. The Tamil Nadu government has indicated it will submit detailed project reports, land acquisition plans and financial estimates in the coming weeks.\nState ministers have emphasized that the airport will complement existing transport links, such as the Pamban Bridge and road networks, and could also serve strategic purposes given the town’s proximity to the maritime border. The timeline for approval and construction will depend on the central government's response and subsequent funding arrangements.
