A protest against a newly announced cess in Tamil Nadu forced the closure of several Tasmac liquor outlets, and ten employees were suspended.

A protest erupted in Tamil Nadu after the state government announced a new cess on liquor sales. Demonstrators targeted the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac), the government‑run retailer of alcoholic beverages, demanding a reversal of the tax.

In response to the agitation, authorities ordered the temporary shutdown of multiple Tasmac outlets across the state. The closures were intended to contain the unrest and protect public order.

The administration also suspended ten Tasmac staff members, citing their alleged involvement in the protest activities. Officials said the disciplinary action was taken to deter further disruptions and ensure compliance with government directives.

State officials have not yet disclosed the exact number of shops closed or the duration of the suspension, but they indicated that normal operations would resume once the situation stabilises.
