The Tamil Nadu government announced a Rs 25 lakh health insurance scheme, alongside plans for a 400‑bed multi‑specialty hospital and additional cancer centres across the state.
Chennai – The Tamil Nadu health ministry unveiled a comprehensive health protection scheme that will provide up to Rs 25 lakh coverage per family for serious illnesses. The initiative aims to reduce out‑of‑pocket expenses for low‑ and middle‑income households and is part of the state’s broader effort to strengthen public healthcare.
Alongside the insurance cover, the government disclosed plans to construct a new 400‑bed hospital equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical facilities. The facility is slated to serve as a tertiary care hub for the region, alleviating pressure on existing public hospitals.
The announcement also included the establishment of several dedicated cancer centres to expand oncology services. These centres will focus on early detection, treatment and rehabilitation, leveraging both government funding and partnerships with private specialists.
State officials said the scheme will be rolled out in phases, with enrollment opening next month. Funding will be sourced from the state budget and central health grants, ensuring sustainability over the long term.
