The newly elected Tamil Nadu government presented its inaugural budget, emphasizing welfare schemes, while opposition parties labeled the proposals as 'Big Zero'.

The Vijay Government unveiled its first state budget on Tuesday, outlining a series of welfare measures aimed at boosting health, education and rural development. The plan includes increased spending on public hospitals, free schooling for under‑privileged children and subsidies for farmers.

Opposition parties, collectively known as the 'Big Zero' coalition, slammed the budget as fiscally irresponsible, accusing the government of over‑spending without clear revenue sources. They argued that the proposed allocations would widen the state’s deficit.

In response, the government defended its fiscal strategy, stating that the investment is essential for long‑term inclusive growth and that it has identified new revenue streams to offset the increased expenditure.

The budget session ended with a vote of confidence for the Vijay Government, which now faces the challenge of implementing its ambitious welfare agenda while managing public finances.
