The Tamil Nadu state government has officially notified three new elephant corridors to facilitate safe movement of elephants and reduce human‑wildlife conflict.
The wildlife department of Tamil Nadu issued a formal notification designating three additional elephant corridors across the state. The move is aimed at preserving traditional migratory routes used by elephants, thereby minimizing encounters with human settlements and agricultural lands. Officials said the corridors will be integrated into existing forest management plans and will be monitored for compliance.
State authorities highlighted that the new corridors complement earlier efforts to protect elephant habitats and are part of a broader strategy to curb rising incidents of crop damage and road accidents involving wildlife. The notification also calls for coordination with local bodies to ensure that development projects respect the identified pathways.
Environmental groups welcomed the decision, urging swift implementation and community awareness programs. The government has pledged to allocate resources for habitat restoration and to install signage in the designated zones.
