Tamil Nadu is exploring incentive schemes to encourage higher birth rates after the state's total fertility rate fell below 1.4, following a similar move by Andhra Pradesh.
Tamil Nadu’s latest demographic data shows the state’s total fertility rate (TFR) has slipped below 1.4, a level that signals a shrinking future workforce and rising dependency ratios.
The drop follows a similar trend in Andhra Pradesh, where the state government announced a package of incentives to encourage larger families. Tamil Nadu officials are now evaluating comparable measures, including financial bonuses for families with multiple children and enhanced maternity benefits.
Health and family welfare departments are drafting proposals that could offer cash rewards, tax rebates, or subsidised childcare services to families that meet certain birth‑rate targets. The proposals are still in the consultation phase and will be presented to the state cabinet for approval.
