The state’s chief minister has announced a complete waiver of farm loans amounting to Rs 75,000 for every farmer, aiming to ease the financial burden on the agricultural community.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, announced today that all farm loans up to Rs 75,000 will be fully waived for every farmer in the state. The decision, unveiled during a press briefing in Chennai, is part of the government’s ongoing effort to support the agricultural sector amid rising debt levels.
The waiver covers loans taken from banks, cooperative societies and other financial institutions, and is intended to relieve small and marginal farmers who have struggled to repay their dues. The move follows earlier initiatives that targeted larger loan amounts and is expected to reduce the overall debt burden on the farming community.
Farmers can apply for the waiver through their local agricultural office or the state’s online portal. The government has set a deadline of 30 days from the announcement for applications to be submitted, after which the loans will be cancelled and the amounts refunded to the banks.
Agricultural experts say the waiver could provide a much-needed boost to rural economies and help maintain food security. The state government has pledged to monitor the implementation closely to ensure timely disbursal of the refunds.
