The Tamil Nadu Cancer Registry has projected a decline in cancer case registrations for 2025, attributing the drop to disruptions caused by the COVID‑19 pandemic.
The Tamil Nadu Cancer Registry (TNCR) released a new report indicating that the number of cancer cases recorded in 2025 is expected to be lower than previous years.
The decline, the registry said, is largely due to disruptions in screening, diagnosis and treatment services during the COVID‑19 pandemic, which led to fewer patients being registered.
Experts warn that the drop may reflect under‑reporting rather than a real decrease in incidence, and call for renewed focus on cancer screening once health services normalize.
The TNCR has been tracking cancer data across the state since 2005, and the current projection marks a significant shift from the upward trend seen in the early 2010s.
