The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned a yearly vehicle allowance totaling ₹28 crore for all state legislators.
The state cabinet of Tamil Nadu approved a new vehicle allowance scheme for its 234 members of the Legislative Assembly, allocating a total of ₹28 crore for the financial year. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, who said the allowance is intended to cover official travel and constituency duties.
Each MLA will receive an annual sum of approximately ₹1.2 lakh, payable in monthly installments. The allowance is separate from existing constituency development funds and is meant to standardise travel expenses across the house.
Opposition parties have questioned the timing of the move, arguing that the funds could be redirected to pressing public welfare projects. Finance officials, however, contend that the outlay represents a modest share of the state budget and will not strain fiscal resources.
The government has instructed the Department of Finance to issue guidelines on the utilisation and audit of the allowance, with implementation slated to begin from the next fiscal quarter.
