Swimmers gathered at MLA Malini Gaud’s residence in Indore to protest the proposed demolition of Mahu Naka pond and the suggested private PPP handover of Vishram Bagh pond.
A group of swimming athletes assembled outside the residence of Indore MLA Malini Gaud on Saturday, demanding that the municipal plan to dismantle the Mahu Naka pond be withdrawn. The demonstrators also objected to a separate proposal to transfer the Vishram Bagh pond to private hands under a public‑private partnership (PPP) model.
According to local reports, the city administration has floated the idea of converting the Mahu Naka water body into a development zone, which would involve filling the pond. Simultaneously, officials are considering handing over the Vishram Bagh pond to a private entity for maintenance and commercial use under a PPP arrangement.
The swimmers, who use the ponds for training, argued that the measures would deprive the community of essential recreational and ecological spaces. They called on the state government and the Indore Municipal Corporation to retain the ponds as public assets and explore alternative ways to improve their upkeep.
No official response from the MLA’s office or the municipal authorities was recorded at the time of reporting.
