Surrendered militants in Tripura call for shutdown over unmet rehabilitation promises

A group of former militants who surrendered to authorities in Tripura have announced a shutdown, alleging that promised rehabilitation measures have not been delivered.

Earlier this week, a contingent of militants who had laid down arms and formally surrendered to the Tripura state government announced a statewide shutdown. The group issued a statement saying they would halt all normal activities until the rehabilitation package promised at the time of surrender is fully implemented.

The militants contend that the promised benefits – including vocational training, financial assistance and housing support – have either been delayed or not provided at all. They argue that the failure to honour these commitments undermines the trust built during the peace process and leaves them without viable livelihood options.

State officials have acknowledged receipt of the protest but have not provided a detailed response. The Tripura government has previously highlighted its rehabilitation scheme as a cornerstone of its strategy to end insurgency, but the current impasse suggests gaps in execution.

Security agencies have warned that the shutdown could affect public services and transportation, urging citizens to cooperate with law‑enforcement directives while the dispute is resolved.
