The Supreme Court highlighted a decline in India's Total Fertility Rate and called for a reassessment of population control measures, including the 2‑child norm, in upcoming elections.

The Supreme Court of India, in a recent statement, pointed out that the country's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has fallen below the replacement level, signalling a shift in demographic trends.
The Court noted that the TFR, which measures the average number of children a woman is expected to have, has dipped to 1.7 from 2.0 in the last decade.
In light of this decline, the Court urged policymakers to revisit population control laws, specifically the 2‑child norm that has been a cornerstone of India's family planning strategy.
The remarks come ahead of the next general elections, where demographic considerations are likely to influence campaign narratives and policy proposals.
