The Supreme Court directed the Central Pollution Control Board to review and impose noise limits for fireworks, while also considering relaxations before the upcoming Diwali festival.

The Supreme Court, in a recent order, has asked the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to examine the noise levels produced by fireworks and to set appropriate limits before the Diwali celebrations. The court also urged the CPCB to explore possible relaxations that could ease restrictions for the festival.

This directive follows growing concerns over the health and environmental impact of loud fireworks, especially in densely populated urban areas. Earlier, the CPCB had issued guidelines on permissible noise levels for crackers, but the Supreme Court’s order signals a more proactive approach.

By directing the CPCB to act before Diwali, the court aims to balance public safety with cultural traditions. The board will need to publish revised guidelines and communicate them to manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.

The move is expected to influence how fireworks are regulated during the festival, potentially leading to stricter enforcement of noise norms and the introduction of quieter alternatives for celebrants.
