The Supreme Court has highlighted a surge in digital arrest frauds and urged the central government to legislate it as a distinct offence.

The Supreme Court has flagged a noticeable rise in digital arrest frauds, where individuals falsely claim to have been arrested online to extort money.

In a recent order, the Court urged the Centre to codify such frauds as a standalone crime, enabling clearer prosecution and stricter penalties.

The move is expected to strengthen the legal framework against cyber‑related scams and protect citizens from deceptive practices that exploit digital platforms.
