The Supreme Court’s road safety committee has advised that students and teachers must wear helmets to enter schools and colleges in Indore, aiming to make the city a zero‑fatality district.
The Supreme Court’s road‑safety committee met in Indore and put forward a set of stringent guidelines aimed at reducing road‑related casualties in the city. Among the recommendations, the panel urged that every student and teacher wear a certified helmet before stepping onto the premises of schools and colleges.
The proposal forms part of a broader push to transform Indore into a "Zero Fatality District" by improving pedestrian infrastructure, widening footpaths and enforcing stricter traffic norms around educational institutions.
State officials have been asked to draft an implementation plan that could involve random checks at school gates and penalties for non‑compliance. The committee also highlighted the need for awareness campaigns to educate young commuters about the safety benefits of helmets.
If adopted, the rule would be enforced by the municipal corporation in coordination with the police and school authorities, with a view to roll out the measures before the end of the current fiscal year.
