The Supreme Court has declined to issue a notice to Andhra Pradesh in response to Telangana’s plea regarding the Banakacherla project, leaving the dispute unresolved.
The Supreme Court of India has dismissed Telangana’s plea to issue a notice to Andhra Pradesh concerning the Banakacherla project. The court’s order, issued on Tuesday, stated that it would not intervene in the inter‑state dispute at this stage.
The Banakacherla project, a large irrigation and hydroelectric scheme on the Krishna River, has been a point of contention between the two states for years. Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh claim ownership of the water resources and the associated infrastructure.
Telangana’s petition argued that Andhra Pradesh’s actions were infringing on its water rights and that a notice was necessary to protect its interests. The Supreme Court found the petition insufficient to warrant immediate notice and declined to take action.
The decision means the legal battle over the project will continue in lower courts, and the two states will need to negotiate a resolution without the Supreme Court’s direct intervention at this time.
