The Supreme Court declined to lift the freeze on Trinamool Congress bank accounts and directed the Calcutta High Court to expedite the pending hearing.

The Supreme Court of India has rejected a request to lift the freeze on bank accounts belonging to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The decision was announced after the High Court of West Bengal had placed the accounts under restriction following a criminal case involving the party.

In its order, the Supreme Court emphasized that the matter remains under the jurisdiction of the Calcutta High Court and urged the court to expedite the hearing. The High Court is expected to schedule a hearing soon, but the Supreme Court’s directive signals that it will not intervene until the lower court resolves the issue.

The freeze on TMC accounts was imposed earlier this year amid allegations of financial irregularities. The party has repeatedly sought relief, arguing that the restriction hampers its operations.

The Supreme Court’s refusal to unfreeze the accounts underscores the court’s stance on ensuring that lower courts handle such matters before higher intervention. The next hearing in Calcutta is anticipated to address the legal questions surrounding the freeze.
