The Supreme Court has cleared the way for members of Delhi's historic Gymkhana Club to approach the High Court to contest the central government's proposed takeover.

The apex court on Thursday ruled that members of the Delhi Gymkhana Club may move the Delhi High Court to challenge the central government's plan to take over the club's premises. The decision comes after the club, a colonial‑era institution with a 150‑year history, raised concerns that the takeover could affect its autonomy and heritage.

The Supreme Court's order does not address the merits of the takeover itself; it merely allows the club members to seek judicial review. Legal experts say the move underscores the court's willingness to entertain institutional challenges against government actions that may impinge on historic properties.

The Centre had earlier indicated its intention to assume control of the club's land, citing public interest considerations. The club's members, however, argue that the move bypasses established procedures and threatens the club's traditional governance structure. The High Court will now hear the petition and decide whether the takeover can proceed.

The case is being closely watched by other heritage institutions across the country, which fear similar interventions. The Supreme Court's facilitative order is seen as a procedural safeguard rather than a verdict on the takeover itself.
