A two‑judge bench of the Supreme Court directed the Union Road Transport Ministry to notify the ‘Compensation to Victims (Interim Relief) Scheme, 2026’ so that road accident victims become aware of their right to interim compensation.

The Supreme Court, sitting as a two‑judge bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan, observed that the Compensation to Victims (Interim Relief) Scheme, 2026 has neither been notified nor publicised. The court emphasized that lack of awareness deprives accident victims of a statutory right to claim interim compensation.

In its order, the bench directed the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to promptly issue a notification for the scheme and ensure wide dissemination through official channels. The court stressed that victims and their families must be informed of the relief mechanism to enable timely claims.

Responding to the judgment, officials from the Road Transport Ministry said the scheme will be notified in accordance with provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Act. They assured that the necessary notifications and public‑awareness measures will be rolled out without delay.

Legal experts noted that the court’s intervention could accelerate the implementation of the relief framework, which aims to provide quick financial assistance to those injured in road accidents while their legal claims are pending.
