The Supreme Court has set aside the results of local body elections in 50 wards of Punjab, directing that fresh voting be conducted within six weeks amid allegations of candidate disqualification.

The apex court intervened in Punjab's local body elections after a petition highlighted irregularities in the nomination process. It ordered the cancellation of the results for 50 municipal wards and mandated a re‑poll to be held within six weeks.

Petitioners, including members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleged that opposition candidates were unlawfully barred from filing nominations, compromising the fairness of the election. The court found merit in these claims and therefore annulled the earlier count.

The decision mandates election officials to issue fresh notices, reopen the nomination window and organise a new voting schedule. Authorities have been instructed to complete the process within the stipulated six‑week period to ensure compliance with constitutional norms.

Political parties have welcomed the ruling as a step toward restoring credibility in the electoral process, while the state election commission has pledged to adhere to the court's timeline and conduct the polls transparently.
