The apex court has drawn attention to a 44‑year delay in disposing of criminal appeals before the Jharkhand High Court, calling the pendency shocking.

The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition related to criminal proceedings, pointed out that a number of appeals pending before the Jharkhand High Court have been awaiting disposal for as long as 44 years. The bench described the prolonged pendency as "shocking" and highlighted its adverse impact on the right to timely justice.

Judicial observers note that such extensive delays erode public confidence in the legal system, especially when criminal matters involve the liberty of individuals. The court underscored that the Constitution guarantees a speedy trial, and a backlog of this magnitude contravenes that principle.

In response, the Supreme Court urged the Jharkhand High Court to undertake immediate measures to clear the historic backlog, including prioritising older files and allocating additional resources. It also called for a systematic review of case management practices to prevent recurrence.

Legal practitioners in Ranchi welcomed the intervention, stating that the apex court’s directive could catalyse reforms in the state's criminal justice administration. They anticipate that the High Court will issue specific orders in the coming weeks to accelerate disposal of the aged appeals.
