The Supreme Court rejected the Tamil Nadu government's appeal that sought to overturn the quashing of a chargesheet filed against the parents of the accused in the Kavin murder case.

The Supreme Court of India, in a 2‑3‑judge bench, dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal against the High Court's decision to quash the chargesheet filed against the parents of the accused in the Kavin murder case.
The High Court had earlier found that the chargesheet, which alleged the parents’ involvement in the murder, lacked sufficient evidence and was therefore quashed. The state government had challenged this order, arguing that the parents were key witnesses in the investigation.
By dismissing the appeal, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s ruling, affirming that the evidence presented was inadequate to sustain a chargesheet against the parents. The decision reinforces the principle that a chargesheet must be based on solid factual grounds before proceeding to trial.
The case will now proceed with the prosecution focusing on the primary accused, while the parents remain free pending further legal developments. The Supreme Court’s ruling is expected to influence similar cases where chargesheets against relatives of accused persons are contested.
