Study Finds No Immediate Need for New Airport in Tamil Nadu

A recent study commissioned by the Tamil Nadu government concludes that there is no immediate case for constructing a new airport in the state.
A feasibility study ordered by the Tamil Nadu government has examined the demand for a new airport in the state. The assessment, carried out by an independent consultancy, evaluated current passenger traffic, projected growth, and the financial viability of a new aviation hub.
The report found that existing airports, particularly Chennai International Airport, have sufficient capacity to handle near‑term traffic increases. It highlighted that passenger growth rates are modest and that the high capital outlay for a new facility would not be justified at this stage.
Based on these findings, the study recommends postponing any immediate plans for a new airport and focusing instead on upgrading and expanding existing infrastructure. The government may revisit the proposal in the future if traffic patterns change significantly.
