A student attacked his roommate with a knife after a disagreement over a hostel fan, prompting a large protest at Chandigarh University’s main gate in Mohali.
Late at night in a Chandigarh University hostel, a disagreement over the operation of a fan escalated when one student brandished a knife and stabbed his roommate. The assault was reported by other residents, quickly spreading across the campus and igniting anger among the student community.
Within hours, dozens of students gathered at the university’s main gate, staging a sit‑in protest to demand immediate action and safety assurances. They held placards and voiced concerns about campus security and the handling of internal disputes.
University officials and local police were summoned to the scene. Authorities began an investigation into the assault, while the university administration promised to review hostel safety protocols and take disciplinary measures against the accused.
The incident has raised broader questions about conflict resolution mechanisms in student accommodations and the adequacy of security measures in Indian higher‑education institutions.
