The department has set aside 30% of natural water bodies in major districts to boost groundwater levels and address water scarcity.

The Water Resources Department has announced an eco‑friendly initiative to reserve about 30% of natural water sources and lakes exclusively for groundwater recharge, aiming to alleviate water shortages in the state's key districts.

The move targets districts that have been facing acute water scarcity, especially during the dry season, and seeks to enhance the percolation of rainwater into underground aquifers.

By designating these water bodies solely for recharge, officials hope to improve the sustainability of water supply for agricultural and domestic use while protecting the ecosystems associated with the lakes.

The department said the initiative will be implemented in coordination with local authorities and will involve monitoring of water levels to assess its impact over the coming years.
