The government has increased the dearness allowance for state pensioners covered under the 5th Pay Commission to 443% from January 1 2024, with arrears to be paid.

The central and state authorities have announced a hike in the dearness allowance (DA) for pensioners whose benefits are fixed under the 5th Pay Commission. Effective from 1 January 2024, the DA rate will stand at 443 percent, a significant rise from the earlier percentage.

The increase is applicable to all state‑government pensioners across India whose pension scales were determined by the 5th Pay Commission. The move aims to offset the impact of inflation on retirees and align their earnings with current cost‑of‑living indices.

In addition to the forward‑looking hike, the government has confirmed that arrears for the period between the previous DA rate and the new 443 percent will be cleared. Pensioners can expect the back‑pay to be credited through their regular pension disbursement channels.

Officials have urged pensioners to verify the updated figures in their upcoming pension statements and to contact the respective state pension offices for any clarification.
