The Osmania University inter‑college chess championship concluded on Saturday in Hyderabad, featuring teams from colleges across the state. In the women’s section, St Ann’s College secured the top spot, outscoring rival institutions after a series of round‑robin matches.
The tournament, organized by the university’s sports council, saw participation from more than a dozen colleges, with each team fielding four players. St Ann’s displayed consistent performance, winning six of its seven games and drawing the remaining one.
College officials praised the players for their strategic play and composure under pressure, noting that the victory adds to the institution’s growing reputation in campus sports. The win also qualifies St Ann’s for the upcoming state‑level collegiate chess league.
The event concluded with a brief award ceremony where the St Ann’s women’s team received the championship trophy and a cash prize from the university’s dean of sports.
Organizers said the tournament will be held annually, aiming to promote chess among students and provide a platform for emerging talent.
