Workers in Srinagar staged a protest demanding regularisation of their employment status.
Workers who perform casual daily jobs in Srinagar gathered in front of the municipal office on Tuesday to demand that their employment be regularised and that they receive statutory benefits.
The protestors, who rely on day‑to‑day wages for their livelihood, called for a government order that would recognise their work as formal employment and provide them with social security, health insurance and pension benefits.
Local authorities said they were aware of the demands and would consider the issue in the next policy review. They also assured the workers that a committee would be formed to discuss the regularisation process.
The demonstration highlights the growing pressure on the state to address the informal sector’s lack of job security and to improve the living conditions of millions of daily wage earners across Jammu and Kashmir.
