Seven fishermen from the Thangachimadam village of Rameswaram were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Navy, officials said.

The Sri Lankan Navy reported that it has detained seven Indian fishermen hailing from Thangachimadam, a coastal hamlet in the Rameswaram region of Tamil Nadu. The fishermen were intercepted while operating in international waters near the maritime boundary between India and Sri Lanka, according to navy officials.

Indian authorities were informed of the detention and are in contact with their Sri Lankan counterparts to seek clarification and arrange consular assistance. The fishermen are believed to be part of a local fleet that regularly fishes in the Palk Strait, a zone that has previously seen disputes over fishing rights.

The incident comes amid ongoing discussions between New Delhi and Colombo over maritime boundaries and the rights of fishermen from both countries. Both governments have urged restraint and called for a swift resolution to avoid further escalation.

The families of the detained men in Rameswaram have been notified, and local officials are preparing to provide support while diplomatic channels work toward their release.
