Six Grassroots Champions Honoured in Meghalaya on World Bamboo Day

As part of Meghalaya's observance of World Bamboo Day, a ceremony was organised to acknowledge the efforts of six grassroots activists who have championed bamboo cultivation and utilization in their localities. The event highlighted the state's commitment to promoting bamboo as a sustainable resource for livelihoods and ecological balance.

The honorees, drawn from different districts of the state, have been instrumental in introducing bamboo-based enterprises, training villagers in bamboo crafts, and advocating for the inclusion of bamboo in community development plans. Their work has helped generate income, create employment, and preserve traditional knowledge linked to the plant.

State officials underscored bamboo's strategic importance, noting its fast growth, carbon‑sequestration capacity, and versatility in construction, handicrafts, and renewable energy.
