Six arrested for assaulting youth in pyre‑wood dispute at Varanasi’s Manikarnika Ghat

Varanasi police have taken into custody six men accused of assaulting a youth over a quarrel concerning pyre wood at the city’s sacred Manikarnika Ghat. The incident occurred on the ghats where families bring wood for cremation rites, and a disagreement escalated into a physical attack on the young man.
The arrested individuals were apprehended shortly after the assault, and the police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Authorities said the motive was a dispute over the quantity and quality of wood supplied for a funeral pyre, a matter that often leads to heated exchanges at the busy cremation site.
The police have urged the public to resolve such conflicts peacefully and assured that any further violence at religious sites will be dealt with strictly.
