In the wake of this devastation, local authorities have identified a new risk: the Disang embankment, which was built to contain rising river waters, has shown signs of weakening.
Engineering surveys conducted by the district’s water resources department revealed cracks and erosion along the embankment’s crest. The report warns that if the embankment fails, nearby low‑lying areas could be inundated again.
The Assam state government has dispatched additional teams to reinforce the embankment and is coordinating with the National Disaster Management Authority for emergency preparedness. Residents in the affected blocks have been advised to stay alert and report any sudden changes in water levels.
