A tunnel collapse in Sikkim has killed four workers from Jharkhand, and their bodies are being transported back to their home state.
A tunnel under construction in the eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim collapsed early this week, trapping several workers in the wreckage. The incident occurred on a major road link that connects the capital Gangtok with the western districts.
Authorities confirmed that four labourers, all from the neighboring state of Jharkhand, lost their lives in the collapse. The workers were part of a private construction firm contracted by the state government.
Rescue teams from the Sikkim Police and the Indian Army were dispatched to the site, but the depth and instability of the tunnel made extraction difficult. The bodies were recovered and are now being transported to Jharkhand for identification and burial.
Sikkim’s Chief Minister issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and pledged a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse. The state government has also announced a compensation package for the families of the deceased.
