The Sikkim government has drafted a plan to launch a geo‑fenced digital permit platform that will regulate entry into its restricted and protected zones.

Gurudongmar, Sikkim – State officials have outlined a proposal to create an online permit system that uses geo‑fencing technology to monitor and control visitor access to ecologically sensitive and legally protected areas. The digital platform will require tourists, researchers and locals to obtain permits through a web portal, with the system automatically restricting entry once a user steps outside the authorized boundary.

The initiative aims to curb illegal trekking, poaching and unregulated tourism that threaten the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. By integrating GPS‑based geofences, authorities hope to provide real‑time alerts to forest officials and streamline the verification process, reducing paperwork and on‑site inspections.

The proposal is currently under review by the state cabinet and will be presented to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for final approval. If adopted, Sikkim would become one of the first Indian states to employ such technology for conservation management.

Stakeholders, including local tour operators and environmental NGOs, have been invited to submit feedback before the system is rolled out, expected to be operational by the next tourist season.
