The Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly has called for concerted efforts to safeguard the state's indigenous languages and cultural heritage, emphasizing their importance to the region's identity.

The Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly delivered a speech on Thursday urging the state to protect its indigenous languages and cultural heritage.
He noted that Sikkim is home to several ethnic groups, each with distinct languages such as Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha and Limbu, and that these languages are under threat from rapid modernization and lack of formal support.
The speaker called for the creation of language preservation programmes, inclusion of local languages in school curricula, and support for cultural festivals that showcase traditional art, music and crafts.
He also urged collaboration between government, NGOs and academic institutions to document oral histories and develop digital resources for future generations.
The call comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen regional identity and preserve the unique cultural fabric of Sikkim.
