Sikkim's government has mapped 40 glacial lakes classified as high risk for outburst floods and is intensifying mitigation measures.

The state administration of Sikkim has completed a survey that identified forty glacial lakes posing a high threat of outburst flooding. These water bodies, located in the Himalayan terrain of the state, are now listed as priority sites for disaster risk reduction.

In response, officials have announced a series of preparedness actions aimed at reducing the potential impact of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). The plan includes enhanced on‑ground monitoring, installation of early‑warning equipment, and coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority.

Local communities in vulnerable valleys are being briefed on evacuation protocols and risk awareness, while scientific agencies are tasked with continuous assessment of lake stability. The move reflects Sikkim's broader commitment to climate‑adaptation and safeguarding lives and infrastructure in the mountainous region.
