Sikkim has officially achieved the status of India’s first fully organic state, marking a landmark shift in its agricultural policy.

The state government of Sikkim announced that it has attained the distinction of being the first Indian state to convert all its agricultural lands to organic production. The declaration follows years of policy measures that banned the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides across the state.

Officials highlighted that the transition aims to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, improve soil health, and open new market opportunities for organic produce. Farmers have been encouraged to adopt natural composting, bio‑fertilizers and integrated pest‑management practices under the state’s organic certification framework.

Sikkim’s achievement is expected to serve as a model for other regions seeking sustainable agriculture, while also boosting eco‑tourism by showcasing its pristine, chemical‑free landscapes.

The government plans to monitor compliance through regular soil testing and to support growers with training and financial incentives, ensuring the organic status is maintained in the long term.
