The Bar Association of Sikkim has formally endorsed a mandatory Code of Conduct for lawyers and a policy encouraging the use of local employment vehicles.
The Bar Association of Sikkim announced its endorsement of a mandatory Code of Conduct for legal practitioners during a meeting held in Gangtok on 15 October 2024. The resolution also supports a new policy that promotes the use of local employment vehicles among its members.
The Code of Conduct, which will be adopted by all registered lawyers in the state, aims to standardise professional ethics and improve public trust in the legal system. It includes provisions on client confidentiality, conflict of interest, and professional courtesy.
The local employment vehicle policy encourages members to use vehicles registered in Sikkim for official duties, thereby boosting local employment and reducing the state's carbon footprint. The association expects the policy to create jobs for local drivers and mechanics.
The decision follows a broader national trend of professional bodies adopting stricter ethical guidelines. The Bar Association plans to monitor compliance through periodic audits and disciplinary hearings.
