SIAM has withdrawn its letter warning of chloride and moisture contamination in E20 petrol, citing scientific evidence that chloride can cause corrosion and moisture can compromise fuel quality.

SIAM, the industry body representing fuel distributors, has retracted a letter that had highlighted the presence of chloride and moisture in E20 petrol. The letter, which was circulated earlier this month, warned that chloride ions could accelerate corrosion in fuel system components, while moisture could lead to phase separation and reduce fuel efficiency.

In a statement, SIAM cited recent scientific studies that confirm the corrosive nature of chloride when present in petrol and the detrimental effects of water on ethanol blends. The organization emphasized that maintaining low levels of both contaminants is essential for the longevity of vehicles and the overall quality of the fuel supply.

Hindustan Times covered the development, noting that the withdrawal comes after a review of the data presented by SIAM. The publication highlighted that the industry body’s concerns were grounded in laboratory tests that measured chloride concentration and moisture content in petrol samples.

The decision to retract the letter does not diminish the importance of monitoring fuel purity. SIAM reiterated its commitment to working with manufacturers and regulators to ensure that E20 petrol meets safety and performance standards.
