Shubman Gill will sit out Punjab's first Ranji Trophy game, with Uday Saharan taking over the captaincy for the opening fixture.
Punjab's Ranji Trophy campaign will begin without opening‑batting prodigy Shubman Gill, who has been ruled out of the first match. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill will miss the fixture due to undisclosed reasons, leaving the team to adjust its batting order.
In Gill's absence, senior batsman Uday Saharan has been appointed captain for the opening game. Saharan, who has been a regular feature in Punjab's domestic side, will lead the side against their first opponent of the season.
Team officials said the decision aims to maintain stability and give younger players a chance to step up. Punjab will look to post a competitive total and rely on its bowling unit to compensate for the loss of Gill's experience.
The match is scheduled to be played at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, with fans eager to see how the side performs under Saharan's leadership.
Further updates will follow after the game, including any statements from the Indian national team captain regarding Gill's availability for upcoming international duties.
