Shopkeepers in Ludhiana have stopped the installation of new railings on a railway bridge, demanding that additional railings be provided.

Shopkeepers operating near a railway bridge in Ludhiana have blocked the ongoing work to install safety railings, insisting that the railway authorities provide extra railings to protect their premises. The dispute arose when the railway department began fitting standard railings on the bridge, a move intended to improve pedestrian safety.

The merchants argue that the current design does not shield their shops from the flow of traffic and that additional barriers are required to prevent accidental damage and loss of livelihood. They have staged a sit‑in at the construction site, refusing to allow workers to proceed until their demand is addressed.

Railway officials have acknowledged the concerns and said they are reviewing the shopkeepers' request. A senior engineer from the railway division stated that any modification would need to meet safety regulations and structural guidelines, and that a meeting with the merchants is scheduled for later this week.

In the meantime, commuters using the bridge have been advised to use alternate routes, and the railway has deployed additional staff to manage crowd movement and ensure safety during the standoff.
