Central Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, speaking in Bhopal on Vijayadashami, said that rising drug addiction and violence against daughters are serious social evils, and that merely burning Ravan's effigy is insufficient.
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – On the occasion of Vijayadashami, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan addressed a gathering and highlighted two pressing social concerns. He warned that the increasing prevalence of drug addiction among youth and the persistent violence against girls are grave societal ills that demand urgent attention.
Chauhan emphasized that the symbolic act of burning Ravan's effigy, while a traditional part of the festival, does not address these deeper problems. He urged community leaders, families and law‑enforcement agencies to work together to curb substance abuse and protect the rights of daughters.
The minister called for stronger preventive measures, including awareness campaigns in schools and stricter enforcement of existing anti‑drug laws. He also appealed for stricter implementation of laws that safeguard women and girls, stressing that cultural celebrations should be accompanied by concrete actions against such evils.
His remarks were part of a broader government effort to tackle social issues that affect the nation’s development, reflecting the administration’s commitment to gender safety and public health.
