A boat capsized in Raghopur, Vaishali, killing seven children; the grieving father, Suresh Rai, says the vessel had been reported unsafe for three years.
A wooden boat carrying a family from Raghopur in Vaishali district capsized early on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of seven children. The victims were identified as the children of local resident Suresh Rai, who survived the incident.
Rai told reporters that the boat had been in a dilapidated condition for years and that he had lodged complaints with local authorities three years ago, urging repairs that never materialised. He said the vessel’s poor maintenance directly contributed to the tragedy.
Following the accident, district officials ordered an immediate inquiry and detained the boat operator. The administration has also announced a review of safety protocols for water transport in the region to prevent similar incidents.
The community in Raghopur gathered at the site to mourn the loss, while local NGOs pledged assistance to the bereaved family. Authorities have promised compensation to the victims’ families, pending the outcome of the investigation.
