Geologists have identified a seismic gap in Assam that could trigger a strong earthquake affecting Guwahati, according to The Assam Tribune.

Geologists monitoring the tectonic activity of the Brahmaputra valley have highlighted a seismic gap in the Assam region that may increase the likelihood of a major earthquake centred near Guwahati. The observation was reported by The Assam Tribune, citing recent studies of fault line behaviour.

A seismic gap refers to a segment of an active fault that has not experienced a significant quake for an unusually long period, suggesting strain is building up. When the accumulated stress is finally released, the resulting tremor can be considerably larger than surrounding events.

Experts warn that the identified gap could pose a serious risk to Guwahati, a densely populated city situated on the alluvial plains of the Brahmaputra. Authorities are urged to review emergency response plans, reinforce vulnerable infrastructure and enhance public awareness about earthquake preparedness.
