Health officials in Angul district have reported an increase in scrub typhus infections, urging residents to take preventive measures as the monsoon continues.
The public health department of Angul district has confirmed a rise in scrub typhus cases this monsoon season, prompting a district‑wide alert. Officials said that several patients have tested positive for the rickettsial disease, which is transmitted through the bite of infected chiggers found in grassy and scrubby areas.
Scrub typhus typically presents with fever, headache, body aches and a characteristic eschar at the bite site. Early diagnosis and treatment with doxycycline are crucial to prevent complications such as organ failure.
The district health office has launched awareness drives, distributing informational leaflets and advising farmers, laborers and forest‑workers to wear protective clothing and use insect repellents. Mobile medical teams are also conducting fever screenings in villages where cases have been reported.
Health workers warn that the ongoing heavy rains create ideal conditions for the mite vectors, increasing the risk of transmission. Residents are urged to seek medical attention promptly if they develop fever or unexplained skin lesions.
