A glacier collapse in Nepal and China, preceded by visible signs, killed over 1,100 people. Experts say better monitoring could have saved lives.
A massive glacier collapse in the border region of Nepal and China triggered catastrophic floods that claimed more than 1,100 lives.
Scientists had observed brown meltwater and a propagating crack in the glacier several days before the disaster, indicating a potential failure.
The sudden release of meltwater overwhelmed downstream communities, leaving many dead or missing and highlighting the vulnerability of the region.
Experts now call for comprehensive monitoring of glaciers and slopes, as well as enhanced cross‑border cooperation, to improve early warning systems and protect lives.
