All government and private schools in Noida and Ghaziabad were closed on October 23 as polling for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections began.
The Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission announced that polling for the Legislative Council (MLC) elections would be held on October 23. To ensure smooth conduct of the vote and to avoid disruption, the commission directed that all schools in the twin cities of Noida and Ghaziabad remain closed for the day.
Both government-run and privately managed institutions complied with the order, granting a one‑day holiday to students, teachers and staff. The closure aligns with the standard practice of suspending academic activities in areas where polling stations are set up within school premises.
Officials said the measure is intended to facilitate voter turnout and maintain law and order, as many schools serve as polling booths. Classes will resume on the following day, October 24, with the academic calendar adjusted accordingly.
The MLC election, which fills seats in the upper house of the state legislature, is expected to draw significant voter participation across Uttar Pradesh, including the urban districts of Gautam Buddh Nagar where Noida and Ghaziabad are located.
